Parental involvement can be a double edged sword. It is important to meet with the teachers to see what kind of parent involvement they really want/need. Just a suggestion, start small. For example, at our campus a teacher will have a "mystery reader" come read to the class each Friday. (You could start with once or twice a month). Parents sign up on parent night at the beginning of the year and the teacher will try to fill in blank spots with the principal or a high school "pal", etc. The parent picks a book that is a favorite of their own child, but their child doesn't even know when their own parent is coming. The kids are always excited to see who shows up.
ReplyDeleteAlso, have parents volunteer to come play games or oversee center time while you are conducting reading groups, etc.
Just some ideas in case you needed some.
You will do great!
I thought about researching this topic too. I think that there is a great value in active parent participation, but it is definitely a challenge to get it. I think that you are on the right track with your plan. I am interested in knowing what the current level of participation is at. I think that it is good that you are going to be considering demographics in this research too. I am at a Title I school, and our parents are hard to get a hold of much less have participate in the school, that’s why I considered the project. Do you have the Watch D.O.G.S. program at your campus? It has worked well at my daughter’s school. Oh, and one thing that always gets more parents into our building than anything else is food. Maybe you could check that out too. It seems silly on the surface, but it works every time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting on my blog :)
I love this research plan. Here are my suggestions: When you are working with your committee to set up your parent involvement events, I have found more will come if you offer food. LOL. I think you have a very well thought out plan and I am excited to hear how it goes!
ReplyDeleteWOW...this may be the most detailed plan I've seen yet. Every step seems to be planned out with every vital portion and necessary party mentioned. The topic of parental involvement is definitely great of interest to a lot of us researching educators right now. I'm quite optimistic about the result of your research. I pray all goes well with it.
